The history of Brighton is that of an ancient fishing village which emerged as a health resort in the eighteenth century and grew into one of the largest towns in England. In the 2011 census the population of Brighton and Hove was 273,369. Brighton & Hove has a large and diverse stock of buildings ‘unrivalled architecturally’ among the countries seaside resorts. The television series ‘Buildings of England’ called the ‘majestic & intimate’ University of Sussex ‘the best architecture of the second half of the 20th century in Brighton & Hove’. Much of the cities built environment is composed of buildings of the regency, Victorian and Edwardian eras.
Officially granted City status in 2000 Brighton & Hove is well known for its diverse communities, shopping mall and boutique shopping streets, cafes, restaurants and night life. A popular destination for holiday makers with its seafront promenade, beaches and Brighton pier. The town is also popular with students at Sussex University, Brighton University and the British and Irish Modern Music institute (BIMM).
Fun fact: Brighton is home to chocolatier ‘Choccywoccydodah’ which focuses on the artistic possibilities of the cocoa bean.
